TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT DRIVING

Instilling safe driving habits in your teen shouldn't be a bore for them or for you-- here's how to make them aware of road safety and the risk of drunk driving.

Young adults in the U.S. can't legally buy or drink alcohol until they are 21, which makes teen drunk driving statistics all the more sobering. One in five teenage drivers involved in fatal crash in 2010 had ingested alcohol, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and nearly one million high school teens drank alcohol and drove in 2011. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teen drivers are also far more likely to have alcohol-related accidents. Roughly one in four teens reported recently riding with a driver who had been drinking.

Through example, joint discussion and clear rules, you can reduce the danger for your teen. Here's how to help prevent underage drinking and driving:

GET HELP TALKING WITH YOUR TEEN. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) offers conversation starters and tips on its website. Find ways to connect with and educate your teens, including a Parent/Teen Contract to help establish family driving rules.

SET AN EXAMPLE. Drinking and driving is just as illegal for adults as for teens. If you have a couple of drinks at dinner, hand the keys to a licensed family member or friend who hasn't been drinking. It reinforces the idea that drinking and driving dont mix.

DISTRACTIONS: SEATBELTS: ALWAYS. No texts, phone calls or GPS changes while driving. And seatbelts are mandatory.

HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN. Make it clear that you'll always provide a no-strings-attached ride home, or pay for a cab, if your teen does drink or is out with someone who consumed alcohol.

GET EDUCATED. Enroll in our Smart Driving School www.smartdrivingschools.com we give Teen SMART lectures and instructions in our Teens Drivers Education class and Individual behind the wheel driving lessons. We teach defensive driving.

I like how you talked about drinking at dinner and handing the keys to a licensed driver. If I have a couple drink I would love to have my kid take the keys and drive but I also want him to be taught by a good driver instructor.

  41. Thanks for the great tips. As a parent of 4 teens I am constantly aware of the dangers of driving. You are absolutely correct though that you need to communicate with your teens and set a good example. We have instilled in our teens the importance of seat belts so much so that they will yell at me if I ever start driving without engaging my own. Not drinking goes without saying as does not texting or using electronics while behind the wheel. http://bicksdrive.com/AdultRemedial.html

  42. It is extremely important for everybody to know that drinking and driving is wrong. Teens who are starting to learn how to drive should be taught about the different situations where people drank under the influence and did not survive. Teens should be aware of everything while they are driving and should understand the negatives with driving. http://www.abouttowndriver.com/en/services.html

  55. Getting a punctured tire never happens amid an advantageous time. This is particularly valid in case you're out on the town with a pretty woman. Nothing ruins a date more than sitting in the auto for 2 hours sitting tight for roadside help since you don't know how to change a tire. Furthermore, women, nothing inspires a man more than a lady that can change a tire! All things considered, really, that is not valid. There are presumably more amazing things you can do. In any case, hello, it's a decent ability to have and along these lines, when you get a punctured tire, you don't need to sit tight for some frightening tow truck fella to come and play with you while he changes your tire. 70. In today’s world, if a person lacks driving skill, he or she may have to face hurdles in his or her way ahead. In this teenage, we are overcharged and love to drive at high speed while impressing our friends. My car got damaged due to my improper driving skills and distraction though I had 2 years’ experience in driving and fortunately, nothing much happened to me. Soon my cousin advised me to take a driving course but really it was very hard for me to find a good one. At last, after reading so many reviews and looking into the majority of votes, I enrolled in Dollar Driving School of Ventura that provides driving training for all age groups. Honestly speaking, it really paid off. Their experience, communication, way of teaching and understanding customer’s mind impressed me. Today safely I can drive my car with my parents and friends safely. At least for the sake of my parents and myself, I’m proud of having good driving skill. I agree with the way you have presented your post while providing valuable information.
